My Father In-Law

I first met Derek and Josie in a slightly compromising position with their son in the Blue Mountains in Australia. They had come to meet Jamie on his travels & having not seen him for 8 months or so they arrived to find us in bath robes quite flushed having just flooded the bathroom in the jacuzzi. They didn't bat an eye lid "pretty cool" I thought - no disapproving looks, no formalities, I was greeted warmly with a big hug from them both. I could write about all the hilarious miss-haps that Derek made over the years, when he first met my parents and swung on a dining room chair and broke it, dropping things and breaking loo seats and various objects in his vicinity so that his grandchildren decided to christen him "Grandad Whoops"! But actually what I want to write about is the incredibly kind and gentle man he was. There are few people I know who take people as they find them, without judgement but Derek did. He was always interested in other people and always made time for them. I'm going to miss you so much, the twinkle in your eye, watching you playing with the girls and your amazing Chinese food. I wish the girls had got to see you playing live with your band but so glad you got to see them learning to ski. You will forever be young in our hearts and memories, I'll remember you whizzing down the slopes, playing your guitar, cycling, so very full of life and time for everyone. It was an honour to know you and have you as my father in law - you were the best, but taken way way too early. My love always Fi x
